Culture in the Czech Republic: Statistical Indicat

The cultural sector in the Czech Republic is a significant part of both the economy and social life. The latest data from the Czech Statistical Office for 2022 and 2023 highlight key trends confirming its growing importance.

In 2022, a total of 222,000 people were employed in culture, representing approximately 4.3% of all employees in the Czech Republic. The highest number worked in radio, television, film, video games, music, and computer games (41,000). Other major areas included architecture (30,000), advertising (28,000), and cultural heritage (26,000). The average gross monthly wage of employees in the cultural sector was CZK 38,212, still below the national average.

Total cultural expenditure in 2022 reached CZK 327 billion. The largest share went to radio, television, film, video games, and music (CZK 101 billion), followed by cultural heritage (CZK 69 billion) and books, newspapers, and magazines (CZK 36 billion).

Public cultural spending amounted to CZK 49.2 billion, which corresponded to 0.7% of GDP.

In 2023, cultural institutions recorded high attendance. Heritage sites welcomed 13.9 million visitors, cinemas attracted 13.3 million viewers, museums and galleries had 12.8 million visits, and theater performances were enjoyed by 5.9 million spectators.

In 2023, average household spending per capita on culture was primarily for television, radio, and streaming services (CZK 2,100), visits to cinemas, theaters, and concerts (CZK 1,100), and book purchases (CZK 700).

Ticket revenues were also high in 2023 – theaters earned CZK 2,293 million, cinemas CZK 2,275 million, heritage sites CZK 1,805 million, and museums and galleries CZK 1,188 million.
